FDA takes action on acetaminophen-associated liver damage

The Food and Drug Administration is expressing increased concern over liver injury caused by acetaminophen use.

Acetaminophen is found in drugs such as Tylenol, Anacin, Excedrin and prescription medicines. The ingredient can cause liver damage when the recommended dose is exceeded by only a small amount, according to a late May WebMD report.

An FDA advisory committee plans to meet June 29 and 30 to discuss options that might reduce acetaminophen-related liver injury.

The drug was the nation's leading cause of acute liver failure from 1998 to 2003, according to FDA statistics. WebMD also reports acetaminophen overdoses per year from 1990 to 1998 caused the following:

  • 458 deaths
  • 26,000 hospitalizations
  • 56,000 emergency room visits
