Acupressure
Like acupuncture, acupressure is a therapy that emphasizes key points on the body to support natural healing and wellness. Instead of using needles, though, the fingers or feet are used to place pressure on these points. This gentle but firm pressing can help relieve muscle tension and promote circulation.
Acupressure points are described as areas on the skin that are highly sensitive to electrical impulses that circulate in the body. When these points are stimulated using needles, pressure or heat, the body releases pain-relieving chemicals called endorphins. In addition to promoting healing and wellness, acupressure can strengthen immunity and provide support for sports injuries.
Administering pressure on key points on the skin can promote health in two ways. First, pressure can be applied to a “local point,” an area where pain is being felt, and this stimulation can, for example, relieve muscle tension. Second, an acupressure point can be a “trigger” that helps relieve pain through a meridian, which is a human electrical channel through which energy flows. Meridians connect acupressure points to one another, and they are connected to internal organs.
