Emotional Freedom Technique
The creator of the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) describes the practice as “an emotional version of acupuncture.” In fact, EFT is a bioenergetic therapy involving the stimulation of the body’s acupuncture points, which practitioners believe are connected through human electrical channels, or meridians. As in other forms of bioenergetic medicine, EMT assumes that negative emotions (disorders) result from a disruption in energy flow throughout the body. Therefore, the goal of the technique is to unblock these bioenergy pathways, the result of which helps patients release their negative emotions. Once resolved, these negative emotions no longer express themselves as psychological or physical stressors on the body.
To perform EFT, practitioners simply have patients think of a disturbing memory or emotion while they tap with their fingers on a series of acupuncture points on the patient’s body. Results can come in as little as one to two sessions. The technique can be used for post-traumatic stress disorders, anxiety, addictions and phobias. In addition to emotional problems, it might help with headaches, back pain and other common disorders. The results of a study on EFT, revealed in an article published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology in 2003, confirmed the hypothesis that after a single session, EFT could reduce phobias of small animals.
