Qi Gong

A form of traditional Chinese medicine, Qi Gong (Chi Kung) emphasizes posture, breathing and mental focus to attract vital energy and promote health. The two words separately mean “vital energy” and “accomplishment,” respectively. When placed together to form Qi Gong, the words are said to mean “cultivating energy.”

In this practice, the vital energy component, qi, is increased, circulated, stored or transferred to others through slow, gentle movements. Two examples of Qi Gong include Tai Chi and Kung Fu. Unlike acupuncture and some other forms of bioenergetic medicine, however, Qi Gong does not incorporate the meridian system, a human electrical channel through which energy flows.

The National Qigong Association claims the alternative medical system can reduce stress, improve vitality and support a healthy immune system. In addition to other benefits, the association says Qi Gong can increase cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive health.
